The right throw pillows make a sofa look finished and inviting. The wrong ones make it look cluttered. These five rules work for almost any living room.
1. Start with a calm base
Pick one or two neutral pillows in your sofa's colour family — ivory, oatmeal or beige work with nearly everything. They set the tone and make every other piece look intentional.
2. Mix textures, not just colours
Texture adds depth without adding visual noise. Pair a looped bouclé pillow cover with something smooth, like velvet or cotton. Even an all-neutral sofa looks rich this way.
3. Use odd numbers
Groups of three or five look more relaxed than perfectly matched pairs. On a standard three-seater, try two 18" pillows on one end and one on the other, or a pair on each end plus one accent in the middle.
4. Add one sculptural accent
A round or unusual shape breaks up the squares and instantly looks designed. A velvet ball pillow in a warm colour like terracotta or mustard is an easy way to do this.
5. Repeat a colour three times
Choose one accent colour and repeat it at least three times in the room — a pillow, a throw and a small object. It ties the space together without matching everything.
